A great letter about the brochure from a reader
We want to tell you what happened when I asked our school district to help us with our son, who is eight, and who was having trouble in school. At first we thought he had ADD, but we tried Ritalin prescribed by our physician and it made no difference, so we dropped it. The school did not think there was a real learning problem, but he was not concentrating, not finishing his work, feeling low esteem, and he was getting lost in the shuffle.
After reading your January column about ADD, we ordered your flyer on ADD/ADHD which gives tips on how the home and school can help either ADD/ADHD children or children who are just super active or who have trouble concentrating and finishing tasks. Our son seemed to be one of the latter...more of a behavior thing than an actual learning problem.
We took the your flyer to our school and had a meeting with the teacher, principal and superintendent. We made a plan, like a contract, that said they would do the things listed in your flyer that the school should do, and we would do the things we should do at home.
We all stuck to the plan, and gave lots of praise for improvement, and guess what...He did so much better the second half of the year from January to June that he was on the ``honor roll.`` Thank you for your good and easy to follow advice. The school has your flyer so please tell us how to get a new one to pass on to other parents. R.H. Shreveport LA
